Groupage Shipping from the UK
Shared-container shipping for smaller international moves
Use the space you need, with a plan built around your shipment
Groupage shipping combines compatible part-load consignments in one container. It can suit boxes, furniture, household goods and selected commercial items when a full container would provide more space than you need.
London Moving Services can plan UK collection, export packing, consolidation, customs documentation support and delivery options. Availability, route and timing are confirmed for your individual move before you book.
- UK collection options
- Measured-volume quotations
- Export packing and inventories
- Customs-document support
- Door-to-door options by route
- Scheduled services on selected routes
You can request a quote without completing the detailed inventory. The calculator is optional if you want help estimating volume.
What is groupage shipping?
Groupage, also called shared-container or consolidated shipping, places several separately identified consignments in the same sea container. Each customer uses part of the available space instead of booking the whole container.
The service is often useful for part-house moves, a small selection of furniture, personal effects, boxes or other shipments that are too large for a parcel service but do not require a dedicated container. Every move is assessed individually because handling, destination rules and delivery access vary.
Good fit for
- Part-load household removals
- Boxes and personal effects
- Furniture and carefully packed fragile items
- Selected palletised or commercial goods
Consider another option when
- You need exclusive container space
- Your shipment must leave on a fixed date
- The goods are urgent enough to justify air freight
- The items are restricted or unsuitable for consolidation
How our groupage process works
- Tell us about the move. Send your collection area, destination, preferred date and a short description of the goods.
- Confirm the volume. We use an item list, photographs or a survey to estimate and then confirm the chargeable space.
- Plan collection and packing. We agree access, packing responsibilities, labelling and the inventory needed for the route.
- Consolidate and ship. Your identified consignment is prepared for a suitable shared-container departure.
- Clear and deliver. Destination clearance and final delivery are arranged according to the agreed service and local requirements.
Groupage timing includes more than time at sea. It can also include collection planning, consolidation, export processing, destination clearance and delivery scheduling. We provide a route-specific estimate with the quotation rather than promising one fixed timescale for every shipment.
What affects a groupage quote?
The final price depends on the complete collection-to-delivery plan. Important factors include:
Requesting the short quote is the quickest way to start. If you already know the furniture and boxes you plan to send, the optional calculator can help organise a more detailed inventory.
Packing, inventories and customs preparation
Shared-container shipments need clear identification and suitable export protection. The right packing method depends on the item, transport route and handling involved. We can discuss cartons, furniture wrapping and specialist cases where appropriate, then prepare or review the itemised inventory used for planning and customs.
If solid wood packaging such as crates, pallets or dunnage is used, the destination may require treatment and marking to the ISPM 15 standard. GOV.UK advises exporters to check the destination country’s rules. Export declarations and other customs steps also depend on the goods and route.
Destination authorities make the final decision on customs treatment, duties, inspections and release. We help you prepare the shipment but cannot guarantee clearance or exemption.
Popular groupage and part-load routes
Service frequency and consolidation time vary by destination. These route pages explain local planning considerations and available moving options.
Other international shipping options
Not every shipment needs the same method. We can compare groupage with dedicated sea freight, air freight or smaller box-shipping services after reviewing your volume, timing and destination.
Groupage shipping questions
What does groupage shipping mean?
Groupage is a shared-container service. Separately identified consignments from more than one customer travel in the same container, so a smaller shipment does not need to occupy an entire container.
Is groupage suitable for furniture and household goods?
It can be suitable for boxes, furniture, personal effects and part-house moves when the goods can be packed and consolidated safely. We review the item list, destination and handling needs before confirming the service.
How is a groupage shipment priced?
A quote normally reflects measured volume, weight where relevant, route, collection and delivery access, packing, storage, customs work and current service availability. We confirm the included services in your personalised quotation.
How long does groupage shipping take?
Timing depends on the route, consolidation schedule, sailing, customs clearance and final delivery arrangements. We provide an estimated collection-to-delivery plan for your shipment before booking.
Do you provide packing and shipment updates?
Packing and update arrangements depend on the quotation. We can discuss export packing, labelling, inventories and the progress milestones available for the selected route.
Which customs documents will I need?
Requirements vary by origin, destination, goods and personal circumstances. An itemised inventory, identification and receiver details are commonly needed, while permits or other evidence may apply to some items. We explain the information needed for the planned service.
Can I request a quote before completing a full inventory?
Yes. Use the short quote form with your contact details, route and approximate move size. The detailed volume calculator is optional and can be completed later if a more precise item list is useful.
