Moving from Dubai to the UK involves more logistics than most people expect. Whether you are returning after a few years as an expat or relocating permanently, shipping your household from one country to another takes planning. This guide covers what actually happens at each stage so you can prepare properly.
Deciding what to ship
Not everything in your Dubai home is worth shipping to the UK. Shipping costs are based on volume, so each item you send needs to be worth the cost of transporting it.
Furniture is the biggest question. If you bought furniture specifically for a Dubai flat, it may not suit a UK property. Rental furniture is obviously not yours to ship. But if you own pieces you want to keep, they ship well — wooden and upholstered furniture survives sea freight without problems when packed properly.
Electronics work in the UK. The UAE uses the same plug type (Type G) as the UK, and voltage is 220V in Dubai versus 230V in the UK, which is close enough that appliances work fine.
Clothing, books, kitchenware, personal items, and children’s belongings are almost always worth shipping. Replacing a household of these items in the UK adds up quickly.
White goods like washing machines and fridges are heavy and expensive to ship relative to their value. Most people leave them and buy new in the UK.
Cars can be shipped, but UK registration, MOT, insurance, and potential modifications for UK standards make it expensive. Unless you have a vehicle you particularly want to keep, selling in Dubai and buying in the UK is usually more practical.
Shipping methods and transit times
Sea freight from Dubai to the UK takes roughly 3 to 5 weeks depending on the route and whether your goods go through the Suez Canal or around the Cape.
Groupage is the most cost-effective option if you are shipping a partial household. Your goods share container space with other shipments heading to the UK. Transit tends to be at the longer end because the container waits until it is full.
A full container makes sense if you are shipping a 3-bedroom house or more. A 20ft container holds roughly 1,000 to 1,100 cubic feet, which suits a typical 2 to 3 bedroom household. A 40ft container suits larger homes.
Air freight takes 5 to 10 days and makes sense for urgent items — documents, work equipment, children’s school things, a few suitcases of clothes you need immediately.
Most people shipping a full household use sea freight for the bulk and carry essentials in their checked luggage or send a small air freight shipment alongside.
Dubai export customs
Before your goods leave Dubai, they need export customs clearance from Dubai Customs. Your shipping company handles this. The process requires your passport copy, Emirates ID (or visa copy if your ID has been cancelled), an inventory, and the bill of lading. Export clearance from Dubai is generally straightforward for personal effects and takes a few days. The detail on Dubai customs rules for household goods is covered in a separate guide.
UK customs and Transfer of Residence relief
When your goods arrive in the UK, they go through import customs clearance. This is where Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief matters.
ToR relief means you do not pay duty or VAT on your personal belongings when you import them to the UK, provided you meet the conditions. You must have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months. Your belongings must have been owned and used by you for at least 6 months before the move. You need to apply within 12 months of establishing your UK residence.
The application is form C&E 1246, submitted to HMRC. You list what you are bringing in, and HMRC assesses whether it qualifies.
Items that do not qualify include anything bought new specifically for the move, alcohol and tobacco above personal allowances, and anything intended for commercial use.
If you do not qualify for ToR relief, duty and VAT may apply to your shipment. Your shipping company or customs agent can estimate the costs based on what you are bringing in.
Your shipping company or customs agent handles the UK import declaration through the Customs Declaration Service. The full UK customs clearance process is covered separately. If you are using a door-to-door service, UK customs clearance is included.
Storage on arrival
Many people moving from Dubai to the UK need storage when they arrive. If you do not yet have a permanent UK address, or if your property purchase has not completed, your goods need somewhere to go.
Short-term storage is standard with most international moving companies. Your container is delivered to the company’s warehouse, and your belongings stay there until you are ready. Some companies offer a period of free storage as part of the move — check what is included when you get quotes.
Storage is also useful if you are arriving before your goods. Sea freight takes 3 to 5 weeks, so there is typically a gap between when you arrive in the UK and when your shipment turns up. Having a few weeks of essentials packed separately helps bridge that gap.
Planning your timeline
Start planning at least 8 weeks before you want to leave Dubai.
8 weeks before departure, get survey quotes from shipping companies. Decide what you are shipping and what you are selling, donating, or leaving behind. Start collecting documents — passport copies, Emirates ID, visa, tenancy contract.
6 weeks before, book your shipping company. Begin packing items you will not need in the final weeks — out-of-season clothes, books, decorations.
4 weeks before, confirm your shipping date with the company. Cancel or transfer your Dubai utilities, internet, and any subscriptions. Notify your employer if they are involved in the logistics.
2 weeks before, your shipping company sends a packing crew to wrap and box everything. They create the inventory. This usually takes 1 to 2 days depending on the size of your home.
1 week before, your goods are collected and taken to the port. Export customs clearance happens in this window.
After departure, your goods are in transit for 3 to 5 weeks. Use this time to sort out your UK arrangements — accommodation, bank accounts, GP registration, school places if you have children.
On arrival in the UK, your shipping company’s agent handles UK customs clearance and arranges delivery to your address or to storage. Allow 1 to 2 weeks from the ship docking to delivery.
