Moving your household goods from the UAE to the UK is one of those projects where the price can vary widely depending on how much you’re shipping, how fast you need it, and whether you’re packing a studio flat or a five-bedroom villa. Most people don’t think about half the charges involved until they see the final invoice.
If you’re planning a move from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to the UK, the figures here should give you a realistic starting point. Every shipment is different, though, and the only way to get an accurate number is through a proper survey. All prices in this guide are indicative only and your final cost will depend on the details of your shipment.
How much does shipping from UAE to UK usually cost?
For a typical household shipment by sea, most people pay somewhere between £2,000 and £8,000. That range is wide because the final price depends on volume, method, and a list of extras that add up quickly.
Here’s a rough guide to give you some bearings:
A few boxes and small personal items shipped by groupage (shared container) might come in under £1,500. A one or two bedroom flat’s worth of furniture (say 200 to 400 cubic feet) usually falls between £2,500 and £5,000 by sea. A full container load for a larger home can run from £5,000 to £10,000 or more. Air freight for urgent or smaller shipments starts at around £4 to £6 per kilogram, so a 500 kg shipment could cost £2,000 to £3,000 just for the freight.
These are indicative ranges, not fixed prices. Your actual cost will depend on the factors covered below.
Groupage vs full container vs air freight
Groupage (shared container) is the most common option for shipments that don’t fill an entire container. Your goods share space with other customers’ cargo heading to the same destination. You pay per cubic foot or cubic metre, which makes it the cheapest option for anything under about 600 cubic feet. The trade-off is timing: the container doesn’t leave until it’s full, which can add a week or two to transit time.
Full container (FCL) makes sense when you have enough furniture and boxes to fill a 20-foot or 40-foot container. A 20ft container holds roughly 1,000 to 1,100 cubic feet. The cost is a flat rate for the container regardless of whether you fill it completely, so it only becomes economical when you have enough volume to justify the price. For a full UAE to UK move, this is often the right choice.
Air freight is fast but expensive. It’s best suited to urgent shipments, high-value items, or situations where you only need a few boxes delivered quickly. Transit time is typically 5 to 10 days including clearance, compared to 4 to 6 weeks by sea. The per-kilo pricing means costs add up fast with weight.
What changes the final price
Several things push the cost up or down beyond the basic freight charge:
Volume and weight. This is the main driver. Shipping companies quote based on cubic volume for sea freight and weight for air freight. A few extra pieces of furniture or an additional wardrobe box can shift the quote noticeably.
Packing and wrapping. Professional export packing (crating, wrapping, and protecting furniture for a sea voyage) is usually quoted separately. If your removal company includes packing in the price, check what level of packing. There’s a difference between protective wrapping for a container and the kind of crating needed for fragile items.
Insurance. Marine transit insurance typically costs 2 to 4 percent of the declared value of your goods. It’s optional but strongly recommended for international moves.
Time of year. Summer months (June to September) tend to be busier for UAE departures, especially around school year endings. Demand affects container availability and sometimes pricing.
Access at both ends. If the collection address in Dubai or Abu Dhabi has difficult access (high floors without a lift, narrow streets, parking restrictions), the removal company may charge for additional labour or equipment. The same applies at the UK delivery address.
Dubai vs Abu Dhabi collection
The cost difference between collecting from Dubai and Abu Dhabi is usually small, but it exists. Most shipping companies operating UAE to UK routes have depots or partners in both cities.
Dubai collections tend to be slightly easier because the port facilities at Jebel Ali are closer to most residential areas. Abu Dhabi collections may involve a small additional charge to cover the transfer of goods to the port, though many companies absorb this into their standard pricing for the route.
Collections from Sharjah are common and priced similarly to Dubai given its proximity to Jebel Ali port. For other Northern Emirates like Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, expect a small collection surcharge based on distance.
Port-to-port vs door-to-door
A port-to-port quote covers the sea freight between the UAE port (typically Jebel Ali) and a UK port (usually Tilbury, Felixstowe, or Southampton). It does not include collection from your home, packing, customs clearance at either end, or delivery to your UK address.
A door-to-door quote covers the full chain: collection, packing, export clearance, freight, UK import clearance, delivery, and sometimes unpacking. It costs more upfront, but you avoid surprise charges at each stage of the process.
For most household moves, door-to-door is the better option because it gives you a single price and a single point of contact. Port-to-port can work if you have your own customs broker and UK-side logistics arranged, but for personal household goods this adds complexity without saving much money.
UK customs and Transfer of Residence relief
When your goods arrive in the UK, they go through customs clearance. This is where costs can either stay manageable or spiral, depending on whether you qualify for relief.
If you’re transferring your residence to the UK, you may be eligible for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, which means you won’t pay import duty or VAT on your personal belongings. For a typical household shipment, this can save several thousand pounds. Without ToR relief, you could face VAT at 20 percent on the declared value of your goods.
The relief requires filling in a C&E 1246 form, and your goods need to have been owned and used by you for at least 12 months. A good removal company will handle the paperwork as part of a door-to-door service.
Customs clearance itself typically takes 2 to 5 working days. How long customs takes depends on whether the paperwork is complete and whether HMRC selects the shipment for inspection.
Storage costs if the UK property isn’t ready
If your UK home isn’t ready when your shipment arrives, you’ll need storage. This is more common than people expect, especially when sale completions or tenancy start dates don’t line up with shipping schedules.
Most removal companies offer storage services in their UK warehouses. Costs vary by volume, but expect to pay roughly £20 to £50 per week for a typical 200 cubic foot consignment in containerised storage. Larger shipments cost proportionally more.
Storage charges usually include handling in and out, but check whether your quote includes re-delivery to your final address or whether that’s an additional charge.
Typical transit times by method
Sea freight (groupage) from UAE to UK typically takes 5 to 7 weeks, including time to fill the container, the sailing, and UK-side clearance. A full container can be faster because it ships on your schedule rather than waiting for other cargo, so 4 to 6 weeks is more typical.
Air freight takes 5 to 10 days from collection to delivery, including clearance. This makes it the obvious choice for essential items you need immediately, even if the rest of your shipment follows by sea.
Road freight through the Middle East and Europe is possible but rarely used for household goods. It takes roughly 3 to 4 weeks and is mainly used for commercial cargo.
Extra charges people forget about
A few costs catch people off guard:
Port charges and terminal handling. These are fees charged by the port for receiving and handling containers. They’re usually included in a door-to-door quote, but check.
Demurrage. If your container sits at the port longer than the free storage period (usually 5 to 7 days), you’ll pay daily charges. This happens when customs clearance is delayed, often because of incomplete paperwork.
Fumigation. Some shipments, particularly those with wooden furniture or items stored in environments where pests are common, may need fumigation treatment before UK customs will release them.
Parking and access permits. In London particularly, your removal company may need to arrange parking suspensions for the delivery vehicle. This costs £50 to £100 depending on the borough.
Unpacking and debris removal. Some door-to-door quotes include delivery only. If you want the crew to unpack boxes, assemble furniture, and remove all the packing materials, that’s usually an additional service.
How to get an accurate quote
The only reliable way to get an accurate shipping cost is through a proper survey. For international moves, this usually means a video survey or home visit where the removal company assesses exactly what you’re shipping, how it needs to be packed, and what access is like at both ends.
When comparing quotes, check what’s included. A lower headline figure that excludes packing, insurance, customs clearance, and UK delivery will end up costing more than a higher door-to-door quote that covers everything.
